Manchester United failed to finish the seventh round of the Premier League on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 at Crystal Palace. They will go into Sunday’s battle with Arsenal for first place with an eight-point deficit.

The match started at a high tempo and the pressing of the visiting players made the home team struggle in the midfield. Manchester, however, did not score until the 15th minute when left back Luke Shaw’s shot narrowly missed the back post.

Seven minutes later, Anthony’s surprise lob just missed the right post. In the 30th minute, debutant Wout Weghorst made his debut, but his header missed the target.

On the other side, a great attempt by Odsonne Edouard had to be saved by David de Gea with an acrobatic save. In the 43rd minute, however, there was celebration in the away camp. Bruno Fernandes was given too much space and easily sent the ball under the crossbar.

After the change of sides, the home side had more possession of the ball, but could not get into the well-organised opposition defence. The fans waited until the 75th minute for the first finish of the second half, and once again de Gea played a major role.

The Spanish goalkeeper reflexively parried a header from Chris Richards, who almost celebrated his Premier League debut with a goal. Six minutes later, Eberechi Eze’s direct kick hit just the centre of the goal, but more importantly, Casemiro saw a yellow card, which put him out of the game for Sunday’s showpiece against Arsenal.

And in stoppage time came another blow for the visitors. Michael Olise tapped the ball in from a direct kick and, with the help of the crossbar, gave de Gea no chance.

Alejandro Garnacha was saved by the home goalkeeper and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
