German legend Lukas Podolski is still active in football for Górnik Zabrze. In the sixteenth round of the top Polish league he showed a football parade. With a shot from outside his own half, he split the net and imitated Patrik Schick’s goal from the 2020 European Championship.
The Polish team Górnik Zabrze took on their rivals from Szczecin in Saturday’s round of the Polish league. Against the favourite, they went ahead in the fifth minute thanks to a goal by Paluszek.
In the second half, Okunuki scored first, followed by Wlodarczyk after a pass from Podolski. At 3:1 for Górnik, the 37-year-old Podolski took the ball and shot from his own half to make it 4:1.
From the reactions of his teammates, who were clutching their heads in amazement, it was clear that the 2014 German world champion had managed something special.
Among fans on Twitter, his goal was immediately hailed in the context of the Puskás Award. This is traditionally awarded every year for the best goal of the past season.
Indeed, Podolski’s goal was strikingly reminiscent of Patrik Schick’s goal against Scotland in the 2020 European Championship. This aforementioned goal was shortlisted for the prestigious trophy, but in the end Érik Lamela’s goal won out.
We will have to wait and see if Podolski’s goal also makes the shortlist. However, the German veteran showed the whole world that he is far from forgetting to play football even at 37 years old.
