Columbus midfielder Lucas Zelarayan managed to score a unique goal in Wednesday’s match of the American top soccer competition. He scored from approximately 51 metres and his shot made history as the longest free kick in MLS.
Wednesday’s match pitted Charlotte and the Columbus Crew against each other. The match produced four goals and a 2-2 draw.
The 36th minute goal was preceded by action from the home team Charlotte. Bender Ben noticed that the Room goalkeeper was a little further away from goal and decided to surprise him with a long-range shot from outside his own half of the field.
The Columbus goalkeeper was able to get back in time to catch the ball in his arms. He then started the action, after which Zelarayan was fouled about 51 yards from the opponent’s goal.
The 30-year-old Armenian midfielder didn’t hesitate, quickly set up the ball and fired a shot. Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina was also not on the goal line and the shot caught him off guard. He didn’t have time to come back and seconds later was just fishing the ball out of the net.
The Columbus midfielder made MLS history with this goal, as according to MLS Communications, it is the longest direct kick converted since league statistics began being measured in 2010.
Zelarayan notched his 10th goal this season. With his goals and another 11 assists, he is helping the club significantly in their fight for a good position in the table. The Columbus Crew hold the seventh position guaranteeing the playoffs.
Columbus will face Orlando City on October 9th in the last round of the MLS regular season at an outdoor stadium.
