Tonight we have one of the most watched Champions League semi-finals. A replay of last year’s final between Real Madrid and Liverpool will offer a great spectacle, with Reds fans looking to give their team the advantage and upset Los Blancos.
When the draw for the eight-final came out, Liverpool must have been pretty upset. Real Madrid are their absolute unpopular opponents. In the last eight years, the two teams have met six times, with Real winning five times and only one draw.
In addition, two of Los Blancos’ wins came in the Champions League final, which caused great trauma for Reds fans. And if they are to meet an unpopular opponent again in the eighth round, they must go the extra mile this time.
So at 2am, fireworks went off outside the hotel where the Real Madrid players are staying, set off by Liverpool fans in an attempt to dissuade Benzema and co. from getting a good night’s sleep.
According to the daily El Partidazo COPE, the fireworks lasted about 15 minutes. This is a fairly traditional tactic to unsettle the opposition.
Nightly fireworks in front of the away team’s hotel are quite common nowadays, used quite often by home fans in an attempt to not let the other team sleep well.
The question is how it will work on players like Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, David Alaba or Dani Carvajal, who already have plenty of experience with these practices.
We’ll find out if Real Madrid’s players will be sleep-deprived tonight from 9pm. In the duel, it will be interesting to watch several mini-fights, such as the clash between Vinícius and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
