Slovan Bratislava only drew with Luxembourg’s Hesperange 1-1 in their Champions League 1st preliminary round match on Wednesday, with Slovak midfielder Juraj Kucka also making his mark. He received a red card from the referee for biting an opponent.
Slovan Bratislava even lost in Wednesday’s Champions League first round match when Dominik Stolz scored for the Luxembourg side in the 22nd minute from a penalty.
Hesperange created their first big chance in the 16th minute. After a corner kick, Bryan Nouvier got to the ball in the penalty area and sent his shot under the crossbar. However, Slovan goalkeeper Milan Borjan parried his attempt for another corner.
Three minutes later, however, it was level. Vladimír Weiss showed his precision and from a direct kick he shot beautifully against the wall – 1: 1.
By the end of the first half, the fans at the Tehelny Pole did not see another goal, but another moment was written in the match. And that was when Juraj Kucka, after a foul on himself, bit the opposing teammate Nego Ekof.
The whole situation happened in the first half, referee Viktor Kopiyevsky went to review Kucka’s bite on video, after watching which he awarded the Slovakian midfielder a red card for unsporting behaviour.
The moment from the first half’s set time can be viewed in the attached video below. Ekofo also used the thirty-six-year-old Slovan player’s teeth impression as evidence.
Kucka thus imitated the famous Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan striker has bitten opponents several times during his career, the most famous being probably an incident from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when he bit Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder.
Kucka took his bite into the second half and weakened his team, who failed to score another goal. In a week’s time, Slovan will face a rematch in Luxembourg and if the Bratislava side wants to advance, they must win.
