The manoeuvre of the century! That’s what you could call Ross Chastain’s incredible moment on the final lap of the penultimate race of the NASCAR season. Heading into the final two corners, Chastain, then tenth, pressed his car against the barriers and passed five other drivers on the outside! After Brad Keselowski was disqualified, he not only drove to a fourth place finish, but also joined the battle for this year’s NASCAR championship alongside three other drivers!
Incredible scenes were witnessed by the spectators at the finish of Sunday’s Xfinity 500, which decided the four drivers who will battle it out for this year’s American NASCAR series title.
Christopher Bell took the race win and a spot in Championship 4. He will face Joey Logano, Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain for the overall triumph.
The latter, however, secured his place with an absolutely sensational manoeuvre. Going into the 500, Chastain was in tenth place, which would have to put his hopes of advancing to Championship 4 to rest.
Desperate situations call for desperate solutions. That’s the adage Chastain was likely adhering to when he decided to literally drive his car into the outside barrier near turns three and four.
However, no one else, not even himself, could have guessed that in this way he would pass five of his other rivals, who were all keeping on an ideal track through the last two corners.
The twenty-nine-year-old Florida native did scrape the right side of his car, but came through fifth under the checkered flag.
Finishing in that position ensured he would be battling Bell, Logano and Elliott for the 2022 NASCAR championship crown next week. Brad Keselowski’s disqualification eventually vaulted him up to fourth.
This moment (in the attached Twitter post below) will surely go down in the history books of motorsports as one of the craziest overtaking maneuvers of all time!
