On Saturday, February 10, a battle for first place took place in the German Bundesliga. Bayer Leverkusen were the better side and continue to go through the season without a loss. Has it made a key step in the fight for the championship?

Spanish coach Xabi Alonso decided to make several changes to the starting line-up. Patrik Schick started only at bench. He was replaced by cup star Amine Adli. The deployment of former Bayern player Stanisic also proved crucial.

In the 18th minute, the home fans celebrated for the first time. Josip Stanisic, a Bayern Munich international, took advantage of a great pass from Robert Andrich and had no major difficulties in overcoming Manuel Neuer.

We waited for a reaction from the visiting team, but it didn’t come. Although German strategist Thomas Tuchel’s team had the ball on their feet more often, they did not get any clear-cut chances before the change of sides.

Leverkusen could have increased their lead late in the first half, but Dayot Upamecano cut a solo effort by Amine Adli. The score was 1:0.

Very quickly after the change of sides, the home side added a second goal. Spanish defender Alejandro Grimaldo scored his eighth league goal, assisted by Nigerian Nathan Tella.

Bayern were not helped by the subsequent substitutions. The Bavarian side did not create a single scoring opportunity throughout the match. This shows that Xabi Alonso prepared his charges very well.

In the second half Manuel Neuer went into the penalty area. However, the corner was not played optimally and from a quick counter-attack Jeremie Frimpong was able to head into the open goal.

Leverkusen now have a five-point lead

Leverkusen are now five points clear of their closest pursuer in the top German league table. Perhaps it was in this encounter that the Europa League eight-finalist made a crucial step in the fight for the title.
