After more than two years, Czech fans had a reason to watch an Augsburg league match. Tomáš Koubek was in goal for the first time since 27 June 2020. And he did very well. He was the key man in the match against Wolfsburg. He commented candidly on the long break.

Augsburg, it seems, will be fighting for retention again this season. The modest Bavarian side are doing their best. But now he was worried. The excellent goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz is injured and his place in goal has been taken by Tomas Koubek.

Koubek may be a quality goalkeeper, but the last time he played a competitive match was more than two years ago, not counting the less than two years since he played for the national team. He gradually fell into oblivion in the eyes of the Czech public.

However, in the match against Wolfburg, he quickly forgot about the long break. He scored in the 27th minute, but then he made a number of excellent saves. He didn’t let another goal slip behind him.

In total Koubek made 6 saves and some of them were not easy. Wolfburg had 2.67 according to the xG (expected goals) statistics. This just shows how well the Czech goalkeeper did.

Afterwards, his long break was discussed on Twitter and the question was raised why he left France, where he was the unshakable number one, for Germany. And his reaction? “If I knew it would turn out like this, I wouldn’t do it either,” he responded to the comments.

Now he hopes he will get another chance. But he is not convinced. However, with a great performance, he has certainly earned his chance. And if not for a chance, at least for the interest of other clubs.

WhoScored gave him a nice 7.7. He was clearly Augsburg’s best player, with only the opposing midfielder Maximilian Arnold doing better in the match according to the prestigious server.

And to make matters worse, Koubek was praised after the match not only by the statistical servers, but also by the fans and the admins of the club’s social media accounts.

In the poll of who the Bavarian fans thought was the man of the match, Koubek currently leads with a nice 45.2 percent.
