VIDEO: Karolína Muchová pulled the punch of the year! See what she did at the Dubai tournament
This year’s WTA season has already brought many beautiful moments. But in Monday’s first round match in Dubai, Karolina Muchova pulled off quite possibly the best shot of the year. With a lob between her legs, she shocked not only her opponent Bernarda Pera and the spectators, but also herself.
This year’s WTA season has already brought many beautiful moments. But in Monday’s first round match in Dubai, Karolina Muchova pulled off quite possibly the best shot of the year. With a lob between her legs, she shocked not only her opponent Bernarda Pera and the spectators, but also herself.
In the last year, her health hasn’t exactly held up twice. The former Australian Open semi-finalist even dropped down to the third hundred of the WTA rankings, but the last weeks suggest a return to form.
Muchova only made it to this year’s WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai thanks to her “protected ranking”. The lottery awarded her an undoubtedly acceptable opponent in the first round, American Bernarda Pera.
The native of Olomouc flew through the first set in exactly thirty minutes, with a score of 6::1. Muchová started the next set very similarly and there was no doubt that she would not let this match get away. However, at 3::1 and 0::40 came undoubtedly the best moment of the match.
When the American served, the Czech player showed her colourful game. After an immediate attack, Muchova moved to the net where she had to play a difficult volley. Pera took advantage of it and overthrew the Czech. And then she hit a shot that you just don’t see.
Muchová played a so-called “tweener,” a shot between her legs with her back to the net and, to make matters worse, she even outplayed her opponent.
After this moment, Muchová went on to win 6::1, 6::4 and advanced to the second round. The very next day she fought a slightly more even battle with Sorana Cirstea.
However, the Czech won without losing a set and thanks to her 6::4, 7::6 win she can think about a quarterfinal place. In the third round she will face the top seed Belinda Bencic.
