Arsenal needed to get back on the winning track
Like the old days? At the turn of the century, Arsenal fans were all about handsome combination play and spectacular team goals. Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium gave a reminder of those halcyon days.
Arsenal needed to get back on a winning streak after two consecutive defeats. Mikel Arteta’s team had crashed out of the Carabao Cup a week ago when they fell short in their eighth-final match at West Ham after losing 1-3.
Then, at the weekend, they lost to the home side Newcastle in a league match at St. James’ Park with Anthony Gordon scoring the only goal of the game. Much was made of the situation preceding that goal, with the ball being left on the pitch by mere millimetres.
Mikel Arteta had a hard time with the result of the match, but also with the performance of the referees. And no wonder. Arsenal are only fourth in the Premier League table, but fortunately, apart from the leader Manchester City, the direct competitors have lost and the team from north London remains in contact with the head of the table.

Arsenal players wanted to fix their taste on Wednesday evening when they welcomed Spanish Sevilla to the Emirates in the fourth round of the Champions League. Arsenal led the group with two wins and one defeat at the hands of French side Lens.
A win would take them significantly closer to progressing out of the group. Arsenal started the match with territorial superiority and practically did not let Sevilla do anything for the whole half. The home fans had a reason to rejoice in the 29th minute.
Jorginho took the ball in the middle of the field, waited for the onrushing Bukayo Saka, to whom he sent a wonderful through pass that took out the entire Spanish team’s defence. The young Briton then sent a pass from the first to a well-placed Leandro Trossard, who had no problem sending the ball into the net. A wonderful moment of football.
By half-time, the score was unchanged and the home side went into the booths with a one-goal victory guaranteeing a four-point lead over a pair of encroaching rivals.
