Arsenal failed to win their 12th Premier League match on Sunday, drawing 1-1 at Southampton. Granit Xhaka opened the scoring in the first half and Stuart Armstrong equalised after the change of sides.
The visitors started actively, in the third minute Bukay Saka’s centre just missed the back post. Five minutes later, Martin Odegaard fired in from just outside the box, his effort just wide of the right post.
In the 11th minute, the visitors celebrated. Ben White’s centre found Granit Xhaka, whose shot gave the goalkeeper no chance.
The game then levelled out, but in the 25th minute Gabriel Jesus had a second goal, only to head into the side netting. Then Southampton took over, culminating in a series of five corners in five minutes.
But Arsenal recovered and struck back themselves in the 38th minute. But Gabriel Martinelli’s shot was blocked by the home defence. Six minutes later, after a good combination, Jesus shot in a good position, but Gavin Bazunu made a great save.
The second half started with a nice passage of play from Southampton, but the finishing was lacking. On the other side, Jesus again burned a chance. In the 60th minute he broke away from the defence, then his shot was blocked by the onrushing Mohamed Elyonoussi.
And four minutes later, Jesus’ missed chances were all but counted. Stuart Armstrong equalised in the 64th minute after a team effort.
And the Saints continued their good pace, but couldn’t capitalise on the lead. At the other end, Eddie Nketiah got on the end line, but missed the back post by inches. Southampton were able to hold on for the final whistle and jumped up to 15th place with a 1-1 draw. Arsenal are now two points clear at the top of the table.
