Manchester United’s cup treble is over. They first beat Nottingham in the EFL Cup, then Reading in the FA Cup and then again in the EFL Cup to finally knock out Nottingham.
The start of the year for the Red Devils has been almost perfect, if it wasn’t for a needless loss to Crystal Palace and a defeat to Arsenal, it would have been a beautiful series. However, United faced the Eagles on Saturday as well.
The chase for the three points looked easy, with Bruno Fernandes getting the first in the seventh minute from a penalty kick, and the in-form Marcus Rashford increasing the score after an hour of play.
But then came a very negative moment. In a clash between the two teams, Casemiro failed to hold his nerve and incomprehensibly caught Will Hughes under the neck.
He literally strangled him and the referee didn’t notice the moment on the pitch. However, he was subsequently called to the video and it was clear that the game was over for Casemiro.
The Brazilian midfielder then played innocently and many of his teammates didn’t understand why he was red-carded. But once they saw the video after the game, they understood.
This kind of behaviour has no place in sport and Casemiro should receive a multi-game penalty. Moreover, he weakened his team at a rather inopportune moment.
Crystal Palace managed to reduce the deficit in the 76th minute, when Jeffrey Schlupp scored. The fans were in for a thrilling end to a match that was originally only supposed to be played out. In the end, however, everything ended well for the home side and United won 2-1.
