Spain is slowly preparing to say goodbye to tennis king Rafael Nadal, although “el toro” is still extending his career as much as possible. But there will be no big hole in Spanish tennis as a new prince takes the throne.
Prince Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old El Palmar native has a lot in common with Nadal. Both are big fans of Real Madrid football, both like clay court the most, both never give up on court and both from time to time deliver a hit that leaves you speechless.
“Carlitos” as he likes to call himself, had a knife to his throat in the second round against compatriot Alberto Ramos-Viñolas. He was down 1: 2 in sets, then levelled at 2: 2 and was down 0: 3 in the decisive fifth set. But the young Andalusian switched to a higher level and started playing unearthly tennis.
Alcaraz reduced it to 1::3, then went for a break on his opponent’s serve. But Ramos-Viñolas chased Alcaraz off the court and then had the whole court free at the net. But Carlos showed incredibly quick feet and took away his opponent’s serve with an incredible winner.
But that wasn’t all. Alcaraz had to pick off several smashes from his opponent during one of the exchanges, but he never gave up and kept fighting. In the end, it paid off when Ramos-Viñolas directed his last volley into the net.
Carlitos even faced an opponent’s match point, but proved that he has worked extremely hard on his mental side. In the end, he brought the match to a victorious end after 4 hours and 38 minutes. In the next round, the sixth player in the ATP rankings will face Sebastian Korda.
