Liverpool are not playing the Champions League this season and have to settle for the Europa League. On the other hand, they can take this as a chance to go for a prestigious European trophy. Judging by their performances and results, they are certainly not treating this competition as second-rate.
On Thursday, Jürgen Klopp’s charges earned another three points and are 100 percent in the group. They beat LASK Linz, Royale Union SG and Toulouse. It was the latter team that suffered a 5-1 defeat in their last match.
Liverpool’s most convincing win in the competition so far was a great performance by striker Darwin Núñez, who scored a goal and got a much unwanted assist.
Núñez again burned a huge chance, Klopp defended it
Darwin Núñez arrived at Anfield Road in the summer of 2022 after a season of a lifetime in the jersey of Portuguese side Benfica Lisbon, in which he netted over 30 competitive goals and came close to averaging a goal per game. It was no wonder Liverpool paid €80 million for him.
Jürgen Klopp believed that the Uruguayan striker would bring new offensive options and many goals to the team. But it was as if a curse had fallen on him with his arrival in England. He’s getting chances, but he’s burning a lot of them.
A record of 54 competitive games, 20 goals and 8 assists is certainly not bad. But if Núñez had converted his chances, his numbers could have been much better. Despite the opportunities he has burnt, he is an important player for Liverpool.
He has great speed, he can handle one-on-one battles, he is strong, overall there is nothing to fault him. It’s just the finishing… And he proved that he has a problem with them against Toulouse, when he coped well with a defender, avoided the goalkeeper, but then didn’t score into an empty net.
Instead, he only hit the bar and went to his knees in despair. Fortunately, however, his teammate Ryan Gravenberch got to the deflected ball and had already dealt with the chance and scored.
Núñez didn’t even celebrate properly. But his teammates came out to support him. After the goal, the Uruguayan was substituted and coach Klopp hugged him. He also stood up for him in the press conference and praised his performance, which he was delighted with.
Anyway, still only 24 years old, the striker scored Liverpool’s third goal of the game. He has played 12 competitive games this season with a record of 5 goals and 4 assists.
