If anyone still doubts that motorsport is no longer a dangerous sport, then the events of the start of the MotoGP Grand Prix of Catalonia will severely mislead them.
Current championship leader Francesco Bagnaia started the Catalan Grand Prix from the front row, with Aprilia riders Aleix Espargaro and Miguel Oliveira filling in. You can see the full starting grid below.
Pecco Bagnaia was the best of the bunch, taking the lead at the first corner. Behind him, however, things were happening.
Enea Bastianini, on cold tyres, didn’t make the entry to the first corner, hitting Johann Zarco and then other drivers crashed. But that was nothing compared to what followed a few seconds later.
Leader Bagnaia got a highside, whereupon he subsequently fell off his bike, causing another crash. The next few moments were absolutely horrific, and unfortunately the Ducati rider did not come out of the situation unharmed.
Brad Binder on the KTM team’s motorcycle inadvertently ran over Bagnai’s legs, and the shaken leader of the riders’ championship was then left lying on the track, understandably shaken. He was immediately rushed to the rescue and had to be taken off the track by ambulance.
The race management logically suspended the Catalan Grand Prix via red flags. The start of the eleventh race of the season can be seen in the video below.
Race restart
MotoGP then restarted the Catalan Grand Prix, naturally without the riders who crashed on the opening lap. After the restart, Maverick Viñales took the lead in the race, chased by Jorge Martin and teammates Aleix Espargaro and Oliveira.
Later in the eleventh race of the season, Espargaro and Oliveira took second and third, leaving Aprilia with all riders on the podium on lap four of twenty-three.
At the end of the fourth circuit, Binder on the KTM retired from the Catalan Grand Prix due to technical problems.
On lap ten the order changed with Martin overtaking Oliveira for third place. The top ten order otherwise remained relatively unchanged with Johann Zarco fifth, Alex Márquez sixth, Jack Miller seventh, Fabio Quartararo eighth, Fabio Di Giannantonio ninth and Augusto Fernández tenth.
The end of the Catalan Grand Prix
With three laps to go there was a battle of teammates, with Espargaro taking the win and first place ahead of Viñales. Zarco in turn overtook Oliveira to snatch fourth place for himself, while Quartararo had earlier moved up to seventh.
And that’s exactly how the top ten finished. Espargaro took the win from Viñales in a tight battle for the win. Pramac’s Jorge Martin accompanied the Aprilia pair on the podium. Zarco crossed the line fourth, Oliveira finished fifth, Alex Márquez sixth, Quartararo seventh, Miller eighth, Di Giannantonio ninth and Fernandez rounded out the top ten.
