Fans in Silverstone, England, didn’t have to wait until the Formula One race for Sunday’s drama. The grandstands went silent on the first lap of the F2 main race when they witnessed Dennis Hauger’s monoposto flying and landing on Roy’s Nissan.
The Israeli driver had a bad start to the race. He dropped through the field by several places, and when he came out of Stowe corner, he had to fight off an attack from Hauger.
He crossed the path of last year’s F3 champion, destroying his right front tyre and sending him off the track.
Hauger drove his out-of-control car into the high kerb lining the entrance to the final chicane, which threw him into the air.
His Prema landed right on top of the passing Nissan, and right on top of the Halo, which protects drivers from similar impacts.
This protection system was introduced in Formula 2 in 2018 and has been proving its place in motorsport ever since.
The FIA has focused on driver safety in recent years and today’s incident proves that it is taking all the right steps to ensure that tragedies like the one in 2019, when French talent Anthoine Hubert lost his life, do not happen again.
