Harry Maguire hasn’t had it easy. Once you’ve been the laughing stock of the fans, it’s very hard to get rid of the label.
But it’s not just the opposition fans who are mocking the burly stopper. Maguire is also mocked by Manchester United and England supporters.
The Red Devils captain lost his place in the starting line-up last season and spent most of the year on the bench. Moreover, in the summer Erik ten Hag took his armband and tried to get him out of the club, everything was already agreed with West Ham, but Maguire decided to stay at Old Trafford at the last minute.
Despite little playing experience, Gareth Southgate called him up to the national team again, where, it has to be said, he always gave reliable performances. But he is already taking his (lack of) form to Albion.
Maguire has Southgate’s complete trust and even though he has played only 24 minutes in the new season, he has fielded him in the starting line-up for the important qualifier against Ukraine. In the friendly against Scotland, he came on at half-time and after 20 minutes had already made his mark on the stat sheet.
Andy Robertson led the attack uncharacteristically down the right side, with a weak right foot he sent a through ball to a place where there was no Scotland player and Ramsdale would have easily picked it up. Maguire, however, tried to block the centre, only to reach it so clumsily that he knocked it into his own net.
Maguire was once again the subject of a wave of jeers and criticism, not only from fans but also from commentators and television pundits. And the Albion coach didn’t like it.
“For a long time he has been treated in a completely ridiculous way. It’s a joke. I don’t know a player who has been treated like that by our own experts It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen,” Southgate said after the game.
