There are still three rounds left to play in the Turkish Super League, but we already know the winner of the top Turkish league. After 38 long years, Trabzonspor have been crowned Turkish champions. It is only the seventh victory in this competition in the club’s history and the first league title since the 1983-1984 season.
In Saturday’s Round 35 match, the team from the port city of Trabzon only needed a draw in a home match against Antalyaspor. The match started off strongly for the home team, with Cornelius hitting the net after just three minutes.
Although the visitors equalised and could have even gone ahead, they failed to convert the penalty and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. After the final whistle, things were happening in the stadium. Hundreds of fans ran onto the pitch and celebrated the historic victory together with the players.
The biggest star of the championship team, Slovak midfielder Marek Hamsik, was overwhelmed by the crowd and celebrated the title with him. “It’s the first championship of my football career,” the Slovakian international told Sport Bible.
“Before the season I didn’t expect that we could achieve this,” admitted Hamsik in a post-match interview. “To be able to give these people such happiness is a really amazing feeling,” the 34-year-old described his emotions.
Tens of thousands of the club’s supporters took to the streets of the city, located in the northeast of Turkey on the Black Sea coast, to celebrate the triumph. Stunning footage of the celebrations shows thousands of fans waving lights on their phones while listening to music.
