VIDEO: Grenade from the turn and incredible submission! The UFC offered an otherworldly ending, you won’t see this again
The UFC hosted another tournament on Saturday night and once again there was a lot of fun to be had. And even on the prelims card, where we saw a phenomenal finish. Davey Grant took care of it. We won’t see anything like that again.
The UFC hosted another tournament on Saturday night and once again there was a lot of fun to be had. And even on the prelims card, where we saw a phenomenal finish. Davey Grant took care of it. We won’t see anything like that again.
The biggest MMA organization in the world returned to Las Vegas for an unnumbered tournament that still offered some great fights. The main event promised to be a spectacle as it featured Peter Yan and Merab Dvalishvili.
But there was also an interesting spectacle before the main card. The most sensational moment was taken care of quite sovereignly by the English fighter Davey Grant, who at 37 years old scored probably the best finish in his career.
The Englishman had a record of 14-6 before the weekend, now he was facing 40-year-old Brazilian veteran Raphael Assuncao, who had a record of 28-9 for a change. Both have been part of the UFC for a very long time.
Grant signed with the biggest organization in the world in 2013, Assuncao even two years earlier. Their fight promised to be an attractive spectacle of two seasoned fighters. And that’s what we got.
The duel, which was the penultimate one on the prelims card, offered less than two rounds and an ending that seemed to be from another world. And it was taken care of by Grant, who notched his 15th career win.
The Englishman first hit his opponent’s chin with a grenade from the turn. The Brazilian went down, only as the UFC’s twitter account post mentions, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.
And Grant was also aware of that, and instead of just hitting Assuncao a few times on the ground to end the fight, he reached for an unexpected solution. He landed a beautiful triangle choke and delivered a combination that we will probably never see again.
This was Assuncao’s tenth loss of his career, but his last. After the loss, he put his gloves on the floor of the octagon, and no wonder. He has been picking up defeats in his last fights and unfortunately his best years are behind him.
