The Detroit hockey team entered the new NHL season very well. At the start they lost to New Jersey 3:4 in a close game, but then they blew out Tampa Bay 6:4, and lastly they scored zero against Columbus 4:0.
Shayne Gostisbehere scored the opening goal less than nine minutes into the game, assisted by Joe Veleno and Olli Määttä. The home team had more of the play in the first period, but eventually Detroit went into the locker room down 1-0.
And the middle part of the game belonged to the Red Wings. They outshot their opponent 13:4 and almost decided the fate of this game with three extra goals.
First, Michael Rasmussen scored at 27:45, and three minutes later Derek Lalonde’s men played two power plays. And they managed to convert both into a goal. The first one was worth it anyway.
Moritz Seider started the power play action from his own defensive zone, and he directed the puck to Alex DeBrincat. He then passed it to Larkin, who skated through the Columbus defense and gave goalie Spencer Martin no chance in the ensuing finish.
The Blue Jackets couldn’t manage a single goal as Detroit prevailed
And less than a minute after that goal, at 32:07, the Red Wings struck again. And again on the power play. This time, Andrew Copp got on the scoresheet.
After 40 minutes of play, Detroit went into the locker room with a 4:0 record, and no more goals were scored in the final period. Copp could have added a fifth goal for his team, but he did not convert the penalty shot.
Detroit recorded its first clean sheet of the season and now sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with four points. Boston leads the league with a better record. Columbus is second to last with two points.
