Ipswich Town are probably the biggest surprise in the English second top flight at the moment. The newcomer to the Championship this season is in second place, which would mean direct promotion to the Premier League. Kieran McKenna’s charges are only a point behind first-placed Leicester.

A Pep Guardiola action. That’s probably how you could describe the perfect combination of Ipswich players, which was topped off with an unbelievable shot into the net. The Czech goalkeeper Václav Hladký was at the origin of the whole action.

The first half went very well for Ipswich Town when George Hirst scored in the 6th minute. In the 41st minute Wes Burns increased his team’s lead.

Coventry entered the second half the better side, which resulted in a penalty kick which Matthew Godden missed. The visitors reduced the deficit in the 96th minute when Brandon Williams scored an own goal. The game ended 2-1, with Ipswich already seven points clear of third-placed Leeds.

Young coach with Manchester United experience

Ipswich’s manager is 37-year-old Kieran McKenna, who coached at Manchester United’s academy before his involvement at Portman Road Stadium. He also later worked as an assistant coach in the Manchester first team, where he was able to learn from the likes of coaching legend Jose Mourinho.

“Fantastic result and a top performance in the first half. I know how much hard work goes into a performance like that, especially a few days after the previous game,” McKenna commented to the BBC on Saturday’s game.

“There is so much to enjoy. The atmosphere was great, the football was great, the goals were great. It was a great first half of football,” the Ipswich coach was delighted.

“The second half was different, of course. We could have had better movement. There are things that need to be improved.”
