VIDEO: Goal of the year? Mourinho just watched, Rome’s goalkeeper did nothing. Candreva scored a sensational goal
There’s a lot going on in the Italian league right now. The winner is decided, but so are the two relegated. But that’s all. The fight for Europe, the fight to stay, the Juventus case. I could go on. But on Tuesday, Salernitana’s captain made it all go away. Antonio Candreva scored quite possibly the goal of the year.

The Italian league is on the rise, but that doesn’t mean we don’t see all sorts of unsportsmanlike affairs. Juventus is a discouraging example. However, in all three European Cup final duels we find an Italian team.
In the Champions League, Inter Milan will face a test in the form of Manchester City, in the Europa League they will try to build on last year’s Conference League win by AS Roma against Sevilla, and in the Conference League Fiorentina and West Ham will battle it out for the trophy
Then, when Rome was mentioned, they are in an awkward position. The Juventus case directly affects it, as the points deduction and other results will have an impact on the table position. AS can still realistically fight for the Champions League.
But when Jose Mourinho’s charges could have improved their position in the table on Monday, they failed. They failed to beat Salernitana as favourites on home soil. They only drew 2-2.
Already in the 12th minute, a fantastic goal sent the team from Campania into the lead. It was scored by Antonio Candreva, a 36-year-old veteran with experience from Inter Milan, Lazio Rome, Juventus and the Italian national team.
Midfielder Lassana Coulibaly sent the ball at Candreva behind the defence and the Italian midfielder made a sensational and playful tackle in a difficult situation. Mourinho could only watch, with goalkeeper Rui Patrício not even trying to intervene. He had no chance.
Candreva proved that, even at 36, he is not old hat. After all, he is the second most productive player for Salernitana this season and as captain he has helped the team to stay among the Italian elite for next season.
