Manchester City won 2:0 at home against Newcastle with goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. The match was under control compared to the autumn confrontation and Arsenal came under pressure before the afternoon game.
In the first minute, Ilkay Gundogan had a dangerous header, but missed it by a whisker. Kevin de Bruyne then fired in from a good position just outside the box from a direct kick, but he too headed just over.
In the 15th minute, the favourites were already in front. Phil Foden finished off an individual run with a cross.
The Citizens continued to be the more active side, with only a few chances for the visitors. In the 34th minute, de Bruyne found Erling Haaland, who missed with a header. The away side had two promising chances in the first half, neither of which they converted.
First, Sean Longstaff’s attempt was blocked by Nathan Aké, then Callum Wilson missed a perfect volley. The Citizens went into the cabins with a 1:0 lead.
After the change of sides, Newcastle were active, but did not get into the end. On the other hand, in the 67th minute, substitute Bernardo Silva fired from the edge of the box and Nick Pope was unable to react. Bernardo was only on the pitch for two minutes.
The second shot calmed the Citizens down and the game was then just played out. Foden missed a promising opportunity late on, but he didn’t have to be sorry.
Citizens after winning 2: 0 are only two points behind second-placed Arsenal, but the Gunners have a game in hand. Newcastle remain fifth, but Liverpool or Fulham could leapfrog them by the end of the weekend.
