Chelsea are currently tenth in the Premier League in the 2022/23 league season. They are an elusive 29 points behind leaders Arsenal and with 34 points on the board, the only question is whether there will be European Cups at Stamford Bridge next season.
The Blues are not in form, this was confirmed by the first match of the Champions League eight-finals, in which they fell 0-1 at Borussia Dortmund and although nothing was lost, the fans feared another disappointment after the previous performances.
The match started 10 minutes late due to traffic complications on the way to the stadium, however, shortly after the kick-off we saw the first chance, which was given to Joao Félix.
He shot towards the left post, but goalkeeper Alexander Meyer dealt with it. In the 17th, Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was also on hand to keep out a direct kick from Marco Reus.
After less than half an hour the home side had a chance again, but Kai Havertz only hit the bar. A few minutes later, he even enjoyed a beautiful goal, but it was preceded by an offside by Raheem Sterling and the stands were silent again.
Sterling, however, played the starring role of the first half to perfection in the 43rd minute when, after a hilarious pass, he burned through everything in his path to send Chelsea into the lead.
After returning to the pitch, Chelsea were again the more active team in the second half and were given the opportunity to kick a penalty after a handball in the penalty area.
Kai Havertz stepped up to it and only hit the bar! The fans had their heads in their hands, but after consulting the video, Chelsea got a second chance as the German team’s players entered the penalty area before the kick.
Havertz kicked the penalty a second time, heading to the same side and this time he was more accurate. Chelsea were 2-0 up and would have been the advancing team in that situation.
