The Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid duel in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup provided a great spectacle for the spectators as they witnessed eight goals. The White Ballet won 5:3 after extra time and advanced to the final.
The Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid match offered goals from the start
The semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup was played at the KSU Stadium in Riyadh, the home ground of Al Nassr, for whom Cristiano Ronaldo plays. So Real Madrid had the majority of the fans there.
However, Atleti took the lead in the sixth minute when Mario Hermoso headed home a corner kick. However, the White Ballet managed to equalise and even turn the game around within the first half hour. The same standard situation led to a 1-1 goal when the defence failed to keep Antonio Rudiger at bay.
Not even 30 minutes of play had passed and the crowd saw the third goal. Dani Carvajal’s shot was met by Ferland Mendy, who headed it behind Jan Oblak. That was not all, as Antoine Griezmann scored in the 37th minute. He deftly broke free and sent in a precise shot from the edge of the box.
After 90 minutes, the tie was tied and extra time arrived
The second half did not offer as many goals, but it was still a tense match. The next goal came in the 78th minute after a mistake by Kepa Arrizabalaga, who only parried Alvaro Morata’s attempt. The ball then deflected off Rudiger and into the Real Madrid net.
Atletico regained the lead and went on to claim victory. However, with five minutes of normal time remaining, the Pusinas struck again. After some confusion in the opponent’s penalty area, the best use of the situation was made by Carvalho, who sent the match into extra time with his shot.
After 90 minutes the players started to run out of energy and the game was not played at such a high pace. However, there was no penalty as in the 116th minute Joselu headed the ball into the net off the feet of Stefan Savic.
Brahim Diaz added the final goal when Oblak headed into the Real penalty area in an attempt to equalise.
Real Madrid won 5-3 after extra time to go to the final of the Spanish Super Cup. They will face the winner of the Barcelona vs. Osasuna match.
