VIDEO: Comeback in style by De Bruyne, young Norwegian’s turnaround against Newcastle

Saturday’s tense 21st round Premier League showpiece featured five goals and a shootout between Newcastle and Manchester City. The Citizens led, then lost, but eventually took all the points thanks to a goal and an assist from Kevin de Bruyne.

Newcastle went ahead in the second minute, but Sean Longstaff’s goal could not stand due to offside. Goalkeeper Ederson was injured during the situation, after receiving treatment he made a mistake which led to a great chance for the opponent. The Magpies didn’t take advantage, but Ederson had to make a substitution.

In the 16th minute, Alexander Isak got a shot off, but Joško Gvardiol got to it and blocked it. At the other end, Bernardo Silva had some space on the edge of the box after a quick action, but he headed over from his first touch.

Goal passage started by the visitors

After 20 minutes, the visitors took the reins of the game and struck in the 26th minute, with a beautiful cross from Silva giving Martin Dúbravka no chance.

The Portuguese was clearly in a good mood, hitting the crossbar just three minutes later. On the other side, Isak broke free and hit the back post to equalise.

And just two minutes later, the Magpies took the lead. Again, right footed, again to the back post, this time from Anthony Gordon.

Manchester were on fire defensively, their third shot in six minutes was saved by Stefan Ortega in the 40th minute. The first half, including the nine-minute stoppage time, was played at a high tempo, almost to the point of aggression on both sides.

De Bruyne changed the game!

Julian Alvarez opened the second half with a chance, but from a direct kick, he sent the ball just into where Dúbravka was. The same player fired in the 64th minute, but Dúbravka found the ball in the air in time and headed it to safety.

And the Argentine world champion wasted the biggest of his trio of chances five minutes later when he missed the target from just outside the box. But then substitute Kevin de Bruyne got in on the action and from the edge of the box, he hit the bottom left corner with a floater.

The favourite’s pressure grew in the end, culminating in the first minute of stoppage time. Oscar Bob rounded Dúbravka in the whitewash and cleared the ball into an empty net. The young Norwegian closed the gap to 3:2 and Citizens are now only two points behind first placed Liverpool.
