F1 fans have finally arrived! The queen of motorsport has completed the opening race of the new season, namely the Bahrain Grand Prix. And it has indeed offered a lot, from answering all sorts of questions in terms of team performance, to beautiful battles on the track itself. And one of those was between two legends – Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.
The Bahrain Grand Prix, as the opener of the new Formula One season, offered a great spectacle for the fans in the stands and on the TV screens.
The Sakhir circuit saw some really beautiful or fierce battles, as well as a heart-stopping start by Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll, who almost shot down his teammate.
In the end, however, the incriminating moment was “just” light contact and Alonso and Stroll were able to continue the race. And given the course of the Bahrain Grand Prix, that was a very good thing.
Aston Martin confirmed in the race what the pre-season tests and roughly the first half of the race weekend in Bahrain had already shown. And what was pretty much true throughout the course of the opening race of the season, the Northamptonshire team had the second fastest car after Red Bull.
Both Mercedes drivers could see this for themselves as they were outclassed on track by the Aston Martin drivers, Alonso and Stroll. On lap 32, for example, it was Stroll who overtook the Mercedes driver duo.
The 37th round of the Bahrain Grand Prix was a beautiful and fierce battle. In it, Alonso and Hamilton battled it out for fifth place, with the former emerging victorious. In fact, you can see the awesome battle between the two F1 legends in the video below.
Four laps later, Charles Leclerc crashed out of the race, leaving Alonso with Carlos Sainz to beat to the podium. And he did just that on lap 45. The forty-one-year-old Spanish double world champion returned to the podium after a long break.
It should be noted that Alonso achieved his 99th podium finish with this result. Canadian Stroll finished sixth, giving Aston Martin 23 points in the race.
