Manchester City welcomed Brentford to their home ground, looking for a clear three points and a chance to move into first place in the Premier League ahead of Arsenal at least for the evening. However, the visitors did not come to lose and, perhaps surprisingly, managed to torment Manchester City.
Brentford entered the game as clear outsiders, but it was their players who came up with the first big chance. As early as the third minute, Onyeka crossed into the whitewash as no one was chasing him. However, he was unsuccessful against the goalkeeper who made a run.
Right after that there was a second big chance for the visitors. Goalkeeper Ederson made a bad run, Brentford players had a great chance but Ivan Toney burnt it as he made amends for his hesitation with a great save from the Manchester City keeper.
The home side then showed their mettle, combining well. They managed to close down their opponents at the whitewash for ten minutes but did not score. On the contrary, they lost the ball after a foul, which the visitors punished. A long drive from the keeper was extended by a header from Mee and Toney, in a second great chance, had already succeeded and sent Brentford surprisingly into the lead.
The goal received gave Manchester City more of a kick, they no longer allowed themselves unnecessary turnovers. Brentford had to resist. After half an hour of play, one of the visiting players played a hand and VAR reviewed whether there would be a penalty. However, the hand was in front of the whitewash. Subsequently, Kevin de Bruyne went down in the sixteen, but again no penalty was whistled.
The home side continued their efforts to score an equaliser but they also lacked a bit of luck. That came towards the end of the half when, following a corner, the ball in the whitewash came to Phil Foden who burned through everything in front of him to equalise at 1-1.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Laporte suffered a nasty injury and had to remain under the care of the doctors for some time. However, he was able to return to the game.
Manchester City controlled the game for most of the match, but the result remained tied. In the 66th minute, Gündogan had a great chance and he had a good collision with Haaland, but incomprehensibly shot over the bar.
On the other side, Toney had another chance, but his dangerous shot was saved by Ederson. After a couple of minutes the Brentford players ran into the box again. However, Laporte was able to kick the ball into the empty net to save his team. Brentford were creating the better chances in the game, although the home side had the ball in their sights most of the time.
With the end of the match approaching, Manchester City players tried to threaten the goal from afar, but goalkeeper Raya was confident. In the 82nd minute, Cancelo even tried to simulate in the whitewash and beg for a penalty, earning himself a yellow card.
In the 90th minute, Toney again had a big chance when he found himself alone in front of Ederson in the small area, but again Ederson kept him out. After the 90th minute, the referee set another 10 minutes.
Manchester City put everything into the attack, not wanting to settle for a draw. It didn’t pay off. After one corner, Brentford counter-attacked when, after an overlap, Toney finished into a half-empty net after a great pass from Dasilva.
Brentford sensationally scored their second goal on the Manchester pitch and could have added one more. Three of the visitors’ players ran into the whitewash and combined well. Toney almost completed his hat-trick but his shot was stopped on the goal line by De Bruyne.
Nevertheless, the visitors achieved a fantastic victory which moves them up to tenth place in the league. Manchester City remain in second position, two points behind first-placed Arsenal, but they can increase their lead to five points tonight.
