The final of Peru’s top football competition was played on Wednesday night. It was a rematch between Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes.
While the first half of the season was dominated by Alianza Lima, the second half was dominated by Universitario de Deportes. It is worth noting that these clubs have a great rivalry between them. There is no bigger derby in Peru.
Thanks to their victories in the two halves of the season, both teams have qualified directly for the decisive final, in which two matches are played. Since Alianza Lima was better placed in the overall table, they had the option of choosing where to play which match.
And now it may regret not having chosen otherwise. The first match was to be played at the home of their rivals and the second at home. She lost both. At home, Universitario won 2-0, in the away game they won 3-1.
The clash of a team that was founded by the working class, against a club that was founded by university students for a change, thus decided that Universitario won its first title since 2013. It was a long wait.
Peru has lived up to its South American reputation
Given how long Universitario had been waiting for the title, there were big celebrations in anticipation. Not only from the players, but especially from the fans. And celebrating on the soil of their biggest rival? Understandably the best possible scenario.
But it didn’t come true at all. As soon as the whistle blew to end the game, the stadium lights went out. Intention? Who knows. There is talk in the Peruvian media of a blackout, a power outage, but that would be too much of a coincidence.
Not that it would spoil the joy of the winners. It has not helped the security situation. Several fans of the new champion Peru invaded the pitch. But the celebrations could not take place. Of course.
The footage of the end of the game is going viral. Fans are having a lot of fun on social media.
