Unfortunately, the French league doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Nevertheless, it delivers regularly attractive matches, it is full of great talent and big stars who continue to show that they can play at the highest level.
Sunday’s match between Olympique Lyon and Montpellier proved that. In the competition of other matches in the remaining top five European leagues and the Fortuna League, it may have fallen into the “uninteresting” column, but the reality was quite the opposite.
The first half already offered three goals. In the 31st minute, Alexandre Lacazette, the former Arsenal player who is now the top scorer in the competition with 24 goals along with Kylian Mbappé, sent the home team into the lead.
But then only the visitors scored for a while. Or rather, one guest. Twenty-year-old striker Elye Wahi punished the mistakes of the Lyon defence uncompromisingly. In the 40th and 41st minutes he turned the game around and Montpellier led 2-1.
Wahi scored two more goals in the second half. In the 53rd minute he took a penalty he won himself and two minutes later he took advantage of a great pass from Chotard behind the defence, rounded the goalkeeper and then had a relatively easy job. It was his fourth goal, having scored 17 this season.
But Lyon didn’t give up. Especially Lacazette, who didn’t want to be embarrassed by a talent 11 years his junior. In fact, he too got to four goals in the game. Apart from him, Dejan Lovren also made his mark, but otherwise it was Lacazette who secured the win for his team.
And he proved he has nerves of steel. Like Wahi, he also won a penalty and converted it in the 99th minute to complete a sensational turnaround from 1: 4 to the final 5: 4.
