Levante, the last team to arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night, could only keep their hopes of salvation alive by gaining points. But if anyone in Valencia was hoping for that, Real Madrid’s players dashed their hopes to pieces.
Los Blancos were operating two classes above their opponents. It was 4-0 in the first half, with Luka Modric scoring a hat-trick of assists. In addition, Federico Valverde hit the crossbar twice and the bar once, Real had 12 shots on target in the first half alone!
Real Madrid won 6:0 after goals from Mendy, Benzema, Rodry and a hat-trick from Vinicius.
And in the 19th minute, history was made. From the left side, Vinicius sent a fluffy centre into the box where his teammate Karim Benzema was waiting, and his header was mercilessly hammered into the net.
This goal, however, was special. It was Benzema’s 323rd for Real Madrid, equalling the “eternal captain” Raúl González and making him the second highest scorer in the history of the Royal Club. He is now preceded only by the unbeatable Cristiano Ronaldo with 451 goals.
But Real Madrid’s performance did not end there. In the second half, the roles of assistant and scorer were reversed, and Benzema and Vinícius confirmed that they are probably the most dangerous duo in the world this season.
Modric’s beautiful pass into the box invited Benzema to score, but he danced with the goalkeeper and eventually presented the ball to Vinícius in front of an empty net.
The Brazilian youngster then scored a third goal and completed his first hat-trick at Real Madrid. The White Ballet are thus perfectly tuned for the Champions League final, which awaits on 28 May.
