This quarterfinal match was one of the most anticipated in Indian Wells. Carlos Alcaraz took on Alexander Zverev in a rematch of their Australian Open match. But someone else soon took the lead.

The rematch at Indian Wells

Alexander Zverev surprised two-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the opening major of the season in Australia. The German surprisingly won in Melbourne. The Spanish tennis player was determined to mount a comeback in California on Thursday.

The quarterfinal clash at the Masters tournament in Indian Wells gave him the opportunity to do so. This was to further confirm the dream line-up for the semi-finals.

But besides Germany’s Zverev, Alcaraz’s plans to advance further in the tournament were soon challenged by another opponent. And a very unconventional one at that.

A swarm of bees

The expected duel had barely begun and had to be interrupted. In the fifteenth minute of the match, a swarm of bees disrupted the match.

The main referee of the match had to interrupt the match in addition to his own protection from the bees. Both tennis players left the court and waited in safety for the situation to be resolved.

The rescuer was Indian Wells tournament associate Lance Davis. He resolved the problem professionally and the match was able to continue.

A clear victory

The rest of the match was clearly in the favourite’s hands. Alcaraz got one service from Zverev in the opening set and three breaks in the second set. He did not face a single break point on his serve.

After 6:3, 6:1 sets, the Spanish tennis player advanced to the semifinals where he will play against Italian Sinner. The latter defeated Jiri Lehecka without any major problems and continues his streak of matches without defeat.

The Italian has won nineteen matches in a row and will be the favourite against Alcaraz. However, he is improving his performance match by match and as he proved in the duel with Zverev not even a swarm of bees can stop him.
