Formula 1 had its 14th race of the season on Sunday, namely the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. And it offered a very dramatic spectacle in the opening laps, while on the 35th lap the fans were treated to a beautiful duel between three drivers. And it has a very interesting historical context.

The Belgian Grand Prix was dominated by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who holds a very solid 93-point lead over second-placed Sergio Pérez in the drivers’ championship. After the opening few laps, however, the fans saw a somewhat quieter race.

However, there were also some interesting battles during this Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, with the best of them clearly coming on lap 35.

A trio of drivers, Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri), battled it out for seventh, eighth and ninth place respectively. Notably, these drivers swapped positions on the finishing straight and then after the La Source corner.

However, on the Kemmel straight after the legendary Eau Rouge, Vettel lost the positions he had gained as both of the aforementioned drivers lost them at the same moment. This battle, however, had its own historical context. For in exactly the same way, Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen overtook Ricardo Zonta in the 2000 season.

This year’s duel, however, continued into the next corners. Although Ocon eventually passed Vettel and Gasly, the German driver regained his position at Turn 8.

Ocon, it must be added, put in a truly impressive performance in the Belgian Grand Prix, managing to finish seventh after starting from 16th position and scoring important points for his team. His teammate Fernando Alonso finished the fourteenth round of the season in fifth place.

Vettel finally brought his Aston Martin to the finish line in eighth place, with Frenchman Gasly in the AlphaTauri finishing ninth.
