Real Madrid lost to Vallecano in their last game, giving Barcelona the opportunity to increase their lead in the Spanish league. However, it was not going to be an easy game against Osasuna.
The home team was enjoying a good start to the season and held a four-match unbeaten run. Even in the match against Barcelona, Osasuna took the lead early on. After a corner kick and a mix-up in the penalty area, David Garcia headed home.
During the corner kick, there were several clashes in the Barcelona penalty area until players ended up on the turf. The goal had to be reviewed by the video referee, who eventually conceded it. The home side took a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute.
Further trouble for Barcelona came after half an hour of play when Robert Lewandowski was shown a yellow card for elbowing after a clash with an opposing player. This was his second yellow card of the game and a red card followed.
Barcelona played shorthanded from the 31st minute. Pique was shown a red card just before the end of the half.
However, Barcelona managed to score without their star striker. At the start of the second half, Pedri got to a loose ball in the whitewash and did not hesitate to give his team the equaliser.
For a long time the game was tied. Twenty minutes from the end, Gómez took a dangerous shot, but the attempt was dealt with by goalkeeper ter Stegen.
Five minutes before the end of the match, the game was decided. Raphinha, who came on as a substitute, scored a header after a good pass. The home team couldn’t do anything about the goal before the end of the match and Barcelona won 2:1 despite being shorthanded.
Even a narrow 2-1 win is important for Barcelona. They are in first place in La Liga with a five-point lead over Real Madrid, who have a game in hand. Osasuna are in sixth position.
The next league game for both teams is on the last day of the calendar year. Barcelona will play Espanyol and Osasuna will challenge Real Sociedad. Osasuna will play Fuentes in the Spanish Cup before the World Cup in Qatar.
