Last week on the ATP circuit was full of wonderful moments. One part of the players was in Rio de Janeiro, the other in Marseille and the last one in Doha. Here’s a selection of the best shots from each of those events, courtesy of Carlos Alcaraz, Hubert Hurkacz and Andy Murray.
Last week on the ATP circuit was full of wonderful moments. One part of the players was in Rio de Janeiro, another in Marseille and the last one in Doha. Here’s a selection of the best shots from each of those events, courtesy of Carlos Alcaraz, Hubert Hurkacz and Andy Murray.
3. Andy Murray and his net work
The 250 category tournament in Doha boasted a quality line-up. Although former world number one Andy Murray was not among the seeds, the Scot still managed to make it to the final of the tournament.
He was on the verge of elimination several times in the semi-finals against Czech talent Jiri Lehecka. Murray had to fend off five match points from the native of Mladá Boleslav to finally win the match in the final tiebreak. He was also helped in his quest for victory by this great stunt at the net.
In the end, Murray was not able to dominate the whole tournament, as he was unable to beat Medvedev of Russia in two sets in the final. Thanks to this success, the Briton jumped eighteen places, just outside the elite fifty.
2. Alcaraz’s “invisible” shot
Carlos Alcaraz, last year’s US Open champion, is back on the court after health problems. After his triumph in Buenos Aires, he was also the defending champion at the 500 tournament in Rio, Brazil.
The Spaniard showed great stunts all week on his favourite clay court. He saved his best for the important moment of the semi-final against Nicolas Jarry.
The Chilean had the exchange seemingly won after a good forehand. However, in the end, Alcaraz ran out of the main camera’s view and pulled off an incredible flick down the line, which he sat the ball on.
After that shot, Alcaraz strode to the final in style, facing Cameron Norrie for the second week in a row. This time the match went better for the Briton, who was able to celebrate after less than three hours. The 19-year-old Spaniard was unable to defend his title.
1. Hurkacz told “tweener” about his nomination for the punch of the year
The only event on European soil last week was a tournament in Marseille, France. Hubert Hurkacz of Poland took to the court as the number one seed. The current eleventh player in the rankings managed to confirm his role as the favourite, despite some difficulties in the quarter-finals.
In his semi-final match with Alexander Bublik, Hurkacz lifted the fans from their seats. At the beginning of the second set he took the lead on serve and was looking for a quick break.
At 30:15 Bublik responded to his opponent’s run with a successful lob. But the Polish tennis player caught the ball and, with his back to the net, made an uncompromising throw with a so-called “tweener”.
While this particular point did not lead to a break, Hurkacz did advance to the final, where he defeated the home team’s Benjamin Bonzi in two sets to claim his sixth ATP title.
