The group stage of the Champions League did not go badly for Liverpool at all, however, due to a worse score the English finished second behind Napoli.
Because of this, they could look forward to a tougher opponent in the eighth round. The fate gave them Real Madrid, the defending champions and quite possibly the biggest favourite to win this year’s trophy.
In the double-header, the Spanish team was the favourite, but the first match was played in Liverpool and it was clear that if the home team wanted to have any hope of progressing, they had to get a good result at Anfield Road.
And from the start of the match, they did just that. In the fourth minute Darwin Núñez scored with a penalty to open the scoring.
Ten minutes later, Thibaut Courtois made a mistake in the midfield and Mohamed Salah increased his team’s lead. However, the match was gaining momentum and we saw the equaliser.
In the 23rd minute, a technical shot to the bar by Vinícius reduced the score, the same player got the ball in the net in the 36th minute, taking advantage of a mistake by Alisson.
The Brazilian Liverpool goalkeeper made a real miss when he hit his national teammate with a pass and allowed his team’s lead to be erased.
The turnaround was completed in the second half, Liverpool were disgraced and lost 2:5 after a goal by Eder Militao and two strikes by Karim Benzema.
