After a promising start to 2023, Bayer Leverkusen lost twice in a row and came to Hoffenheim for three points. An excellent performance secured a three-goal lead for the Czech strikers after an hour of play, with Adam Hložek also scoring! Bayer won 3:1 and broke the losing streak.
Bayer Leverkusen was on a roll at the end of the autumn and could only regret the winter break. However, the return in January showed that the form had not disappeared.
Coach Xabi Alonso’s team first beat Borussia Mönchengladbach away and then Bochum at home, allowing them to fight for the European Cup places again.
But then came two defeats, to Borussia Dortmund and Augsburg, so Leverkusen were not going to let Hoffenheim extend this unflattering streak.
And from the sixth minute onwards, Hložek and co. breathed easier. After a pass from Florian Wirtz, Robert Andrich fired a comprehensive technical shot to send his team into the lead.
Bayer continued to be the better team and we could see many opportunities, but despite eight shots the score remained unchanged until the end of the first half.
But in the second half it was a different story! In the 47th minute, Moussa Diaby scored after a good combination and pass from Jeremie Frimpong.
Frimpong was also on show 9 minutes later when he evaded a defender, found a rebounding Adam Hložek and the Czech striker cleared the ball past the Hoffenheim goalkeeper and defending players!
This sent his team into a three-goal lead and we could hear the whistles blowing for the Hoffenheim players in the stadium. They were once again close to the relegation places.
In the 77th minute, however, the home side felt they had a chance to score again. Stanley Nsoki scored from a set-piece to cut the score to 1:3. That was the final result and Bayer celebrated the important three points.
