He retired from the top scene quite early, now Andy Carroll has made his presence known in the Championship. After the Reading vs. Birmingham game (1: 1) he was touched by the criticism of a fan in the stands and went to discuss it.

Reading have had some black days. In the week he accepted a six-point deduction for failing to meet the terms of the club’s 2021 business plan. The traditional English outfit has surpassed the profit and sustainability thresholds.

After six league games without a win, the deduction has further dented Reading’s confidence. It fell close to the relegation zone, so it needed to beat 16th-placed Birmingham at home, which had won twice in a row.

Andy Carroll, as a proper leader, opened the scoring for the home side in the seventh minute, but in the 29th minute the game was level and Reading could not pull the result in their favour for the rest of the match.

This did not go down well with some of the Royals fans, one of whom even started shouting at Carroll. The burly striker went up to him and made his opinion known. The Reading supporters suddenly ran out of words.

Carroll was obviously touched by the bold almost insolent criticism from the stands, yet he turned away from the daredevil a few words later and applauded the other fans. The club will undoubtedly need them, they are currently one point behind the save.

And he’ll need Carroll too. He has returned to the productivity that graced his best seasons after five years of horror. He is now 34 years old and by improving his 8+2 record, he could become a Reading icon who would save Reading despite the points deduction.
