Lionel Messi made his first CONCACAF Champions League appearance of the new season on Thursday night and thanks to his goal, Inter Miami finally escaped their first official defeat of the year. But the game could have gone much worse for the Argentine star.

The divine left-back narrowly escaped a horrific injury. The ugly-looking tackle shocked all the fans of the Argentine magician. But surprisingly, he finished the match.

Lionel Messi is showing great form so far in the new season. Although his Inter Miami has struggled in the preliminary matches, the team from South Florida has not yet tasted the bitterness of defeat in the official matches.

And Messi has been instrumental in this. In his three games so far in Major League Soccer, the Argentine has scored three goals and added one assist. And he added another goal in yesterday’s CONCACAF Champions League match, which is contested by the best teams in North and Central America.

In that one, Inter had to make up a two-goal deficit on Nashville soil when 24-year-old Canadian forward Jacob Shaffelburg scored twice. And Messi was the man who started the chase with a beautiful shot from outside the sixteen. Only for Luís Suárez to decide the tie in stoppage time.

But far more worrying than the loss of points was the situation in the 77th minute for coach Gerard Martin. Home defender Lukas MacNaughton was kicking the ball to safety near the byline, but on the rebound he unluckily hit Messi’s leg and he writhed on the turf with a pained grimace.

The horrific-looking tackle took the breath away from everyone present. MacNaughton’s pins hit the calf of the standing leg unpleasantly, and the Argentine mega-star’s ankle was also badly sprained. But Messi got up after a moment of treatment, drank some water and surprisingly returned to the pitch.

Although the Argentine wondered why the referee didn’t whistle a foul for the sharp tackle, it is clear from the replays that MacNaughton played the ball and it was Messi who unluckily inserted his foot into the tackle. In any case, he played the match to the end and will most likely take part in the rematch at the Miami stadium in exactly one week.
