Bayer Leverkusen are on the rise, they no longer have to think about the fight for survival, but want to fight for the cup. Adam Hložek, who scored a goal against Bochum, is also helping the team.
The end of the autumn part of Leverkusen’s season was successful. First they convincingly beat Union Berlin 5:0, then they beat Cologne and Stuttgart.
As a result, Leverkusen moved out of the relegation zone. And having also won the opening game of 2023 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, it was even better.
For Bayer began to fight for the rungs that secure European cups. But the good form needed to be confirmed at home against a not-so-good Bochum.
And the match started as well as it could for the home side. Moussa Diaby played the ball to Adam Hložek, who failed to clear the ball through the goalkeeper and defence, but after consulting VAR, a penalty was awarded and Edmond Tapsoba sent his team into the lead.
Bayer continued to perform well, but despite hints of chances, neither player could get the ball into the net. But the fans finally got their chance in the 53rd minute.
The returning Florian Wirtz sent a challenging pass in front of the goal, but Hložek was up to the task and managed to get the ball behind the helpless Manuel Riemann.
This is only Hložek’s second Bundesliga goal, his first being in the Union net at the end of the autumn. You could tell by his celebration that a big stone had been dropped from his heart.
The game was not just played out after that, it was basically up and down and both teams were far from scoring.
However, no one got the ball in the net again and the match ended deservedly 2: 0. Leverkusen climbed up to eighth place with this win and will host a strong Dortmund side at home on Sunday.
