Formula 1 currently has the Austrian Grand Prix on the schedule, specifically qualifying today, Friday 8 July. And it was in Friday’s qualifying that fans witnessed two red flags and shocking accidents for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell!
Red flags flew twice at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. And each time it was just a few minutes before the end of Q3.
The first driver to raise red flags and stop qualifying was Lewis Hamilton, who crashed at Turn 7.
At the moment, it looks like a simple driver error, although Hamilton’s drive may have been affected by wind gusts.
The question remains, however, what Hamilton wrecked on his car as a result of this accident. If Mercedes has to change the gearbox, which took a hard hit, the seven-time world champion could face a potential penalty.
It should be noted, Hamilton last crashed in Brazil in the 2017 season as far as qualifying battles are concerned.
Mercedes, however, has a very long night ahead of it, which its mechanics are devoting to repairs. Moments later, Hamilton’s teammate George Russell also crashed. He leaned his car against the barrier at turn 10.
