Leverkusen 2-1 win over Mainz on Friday confirmed Bayer’s dominance in the German top flight. But it also offered one special moment during which those present were worried about a key player. Everything was different in the end.
Bayer Leverkusen really mean business. After Friday’s 2-1 win over Mainz, it leads the Bundesliga by eight points over Bayern. And also broke the previous record in the competition, which it took from the team from Munich.
Bayer has not been beaten in 33 consecutive Bundesliga matches. And so it is clear that the mood is great in the team. This was confirmed by midfielder Granit Xhaka during the match against Mainz.
The Swiss, who moved to Leverkusen after seven years at Arsenal, scored the leading goal against Mainz in the 3rd minute. It was his first for the club and a superb one. He pounced on a deflected ball behind the big whitewash and sent it into the far post with his left foot.
Xabi Alonso and the Leverkusen fans were in panic
But the successful action had an interesting sequel. Instead of rejoicing, the thirty-one year old national player grabbed the back of his left thigh. His teammates, the management team and all the spectators were immediately shocked. Muscle injury!
Teammates ran around Xhaka and the midfielder lightly exercised his left leg. But after a while he started to smile and it was clear that this whole bizarre event was just a special form of celebration of the goal scored.
However, it is clear from the television footage that while some of his teammates seemed to know what was going on, the implementation team on the bench did not. The medics were on their way to the pitch when they were stopped by coach Xabi Alonso.
According to a statement on the club’s website, Alonso knows that his charges sometimes celebrate goals like that in training. The whole situation only illustrates the state of mind in which Leverkusen is in.
