The Polish KSW organization hosted the tournament number 84 on Saturday night. In the city of Gdynia, Slovak fighter Stefan Vojcak made his debut under this brand and if he wins, he could fight for the title in the next fight. Unfortunately, he fell.
KSW 84 promised an interesting spectacle in Gdynia after the successful tournament in the “Coliseum”. The fans were treated to another defence of Phil De Fries, who was challenged by the home fighter, but the Czechoslovakian crowd also had their own pet peeve.
The first fight in the Polish organization was scored by Stefan Vojcak, who must have really impressed the management of this brand. At the age of 33 he had only six professional fights, but he won all of them. He has fought in the Octagon, twice in the RFA. He finished five fights before the limit.
On his debut, he fought number one heavyweight Darko Stosic. Michal Martinek or Viktor Peshta as former champions of the Octagon, who fought for a chance in the UFC, or even got into it, didn’t get such an opportunity.
Vojcak went into the fight with a big height advantage, but he also had the weight advantage. At the official weigh-in alone, he was nearly 10 kilograms heavier than Stosic, weighing in at 119.8 kg, while Stosic barely broke the 110 kg mark.
Stosic is known as a big puncher, only the dominant champion De Fries has beaten him in KSW. He went into the fight as a big favorite. Not only because of his experience, but also because of his position within the organization. Plus, he’s finished 12 of his 18 wins by KO/TKO.
But he knew right from the start that it wasn’t going to be easy against Vojcak. Both fighters traded hard punches and the fight didn’t really go to the ground, which was an advantage for Stosic, who is very explosive for his weight.
The fight was very even for the entire two rounds, however, the scoring judges were not needed in the end as Stosic was able to hit Vojcak hard in the third round. And twice. The first punch rocked the Slovak fighter, the second sent him down. The referee didn’t allow the third shot.
Stošić could rightfully ask for another title shot after the fight.
