West Ham have made a strong start to the season, especially in the Conference Europa League. After four rounds of the group, they are 100 percent, but it was goalkeeper Alphonse Areola’s brace that caught the public’s attention in Thursday’s win over Anderlecht.
West Ham went into the game from top spot in the group with three wins from three rounds and with confidence that if they win they will be assured of qualification for the spring play-offs. They were up against Belgium’s Anderlecht Brussels.
And the first half already indicated that the Hammers were intent on securing the Spring Cup on Thursday. After 45 minutes, they were 2-0 up and in control of the second half, but it wasn’t until the 89th minute that they scored from a penalty kick to make it 1-2.
While Lukasz Fabianski is in goal in the Premier League, Alphonse Areola is preferred in the cups. The French goalkeeper had little to do, but he still scored with a great cross. Not against an Anderlecht player, but against a fan in the crowd.
In England, as in most of Europe, TV stations refuse to pay attention to such riots and don’t allow the footage on air. Yet a supporter from the audience managed to immortalise Areola’s actions.
West Ham are in a comfortable position ahead of the last two rounds of the Conference League. With promotion in the bag, they need just one more point to secure top spot. Denmark’s Silkeborg and Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers await.
