Real Madrid became the first club to win the Champions League and secure a place in the Club World Cup. The next in the pecking order is Flamengo of Brazil, who dominated the Copa Libertadores. And Arturo Vidal is already provoking Los Blancos, as he has done his entire career.
The Club World Cup normally takes place in January, but this year the date of the tournament is not yet known. And that’s because of the World Cup in Qatar. However, two participants have already been announced and it will be a spicy battle.
One of the biggest stars of the current Real Madrid squad, Vinícius Junior, grew up in Flamengo, Brazil. In addition, there are two players currently playing there who are not very fond of the Spanish royal club.
The first is Arturo Vidal. The Chilean midfielder has made his hatred for Real Madrid known often and loudly. It all sort of started in the 2016/17 season when he played for Bayern Munich. He was sent off in the quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu and complained a lot about the referee after the game.
“Two offside goals,” Vidal complained. “Casemiro was not sent off and should have gone off before me. When you’re robbed like that, it’s too much. It was really ugly, ” complained the Chilean.
“These were big mistakes. The referee sent us off, not Real Madrid. This kind of robbery can’t happen in the Champions League,” Vidal raged at the time.
The next season, in the semi-final against Juventus, Real were awarded a speculative penalty after a foul on Lucas Vázquez and Vidal again criticised. “He didn’t even touch him! It’s happening again,” he wrote on his social networks at the time.
When Bayern then faced Real Madrid again, Vidal wrote on his Twitter account, “Payback will be sweet.” He did not play the match in the end due to injury, but Real went on to advance thanks to a 2-2 draw in the rematch, and Vidal wrote on his Instagram, “Krysy”.
When Vidal then moved to Barcelona, his hatred for Real Madrid grew even more. He still supported it afterwards when he played for Inter Milan, only to always lose to Real.
But he carried his hatred to Flamengo. During the Copa Libertadores celebrations, he took the microphone and sent a threatening message to Real Madrid, who he will play at the Club World Cup. “Real Madrid, we’re going to tear your ass up!”
Another Flamengo player who is not entirely in Los Blancos’ favour is Filipe Luís. The long-time Atlético Madrid left back has had his dreams taken away by Real.
“Real Madrid took two Champions League trophies from me,” Filipe recalled in celebration of the 2014 and 2016 finals. “ But I don’t take it as revenge,” the Brazilian defender added.
That Flamengo are hungry for a final with Real Madrid is obvious. When the fans started chanting “Real Madrid, your time will come,” the players gradually joined in the chants. The last time Flamengo played in the 2019 Club World Cup, they lost 0-1 to Liverpool.
