The Europa League and Sevilla, it fits together. The Andalusian side has won the second most prestigious club competition six times, the most in its history. Sevilla’s vice-president confirms this reputation as the king of the Europa League.
Sevilla won its first European trophy in the 2005/06 season, then still under the name of UEFA Cup. In the summer, Sevilla also managed to win the UEFA Super Cup and, to make matters worse, defended the UEFA Cup the following year.
Then came the golden hat-trick of the Spanish team. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, Sevilla dominated the Europa League three times in a row. The next trophy then came in 2020.
In this year’s edition, Sevilla had a lot of bitter moments. It absolutely failed to manage the summer transfer period, letting go key stoppers Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos and virtually not replacing them in any way.
As a result, they got bogged down in relegation fights and even found themselves on the relegation rungs for a few months.
“What I suffered this year, when the team was on the relegation places, then climbed out and after one loss came back, I have never experienced in my life. I don’t wish that on my worst enemy. I hardly slept,” Sevilla vice-president José María del Nido Carrasco told MARCA newspaper.
Despite such a difficult year, Sevilla managed to reach the final of the Europa League, their beloved competition, once again. Along the way, it had to knock out the likes of Manchester United and Juventus.
“It’s true that people think this competition belongs to us. We got to the eighth round, we made it through despite the state the team was in, and presidents and directors of other clubs started writing to me saying: ‘You’re going to win it again this year’. It’s true that every time we reached the quarter-finals, we won the competition,” del Nido Carrasco said.
