Jiří Veselý is starting to get into optimal form. He will play the third round at the US Open, which he has not yet passed in his career. If he were to succeed now, it would most likely come down to another duel with Novak Djokovic.

Jiri Vesely has only played one tournament on a hard surface before the start of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season. He chose the challenger in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Poland.

He successfully passed the qualification, so he could also play the main competition. In the first round he defeated the Dutchman Sels after sets 6:4 and 7:5. In the second round, however, he lost to the 28-year-old Hassan from Lebanon.

The fans probably did not have high expectations from him at the US Open. Thanks to his protected ranking, he did not have to qualify. In the first round, the lottery gave him the successful qualifier Couacaud from France.

The Pribram native won after a five-set battle that lasted almost 200 minutes. During the match he served 23 aces and six times he took his opponent’s serve away.

In the second round, Cerundolo, the tournament’s number 20, stood in his way. It was expected to be a relatively smooth course, but Vesely defied all odds. In the fifth set, Cerundolo served for the win, but the pressure didn’t let up.

The fate of the whole match had to be decided by a super tiebreak, in which the Czech representative won 10:6. In the third round, he will face Croatian Gojo, among others, who defeated Tomáš Macháč.

With this, the 2013 Davis Cup winner equalled his previous best. He has only played the third round at the US Open in 2015.

If he manages to win on Friday, he could additionally face Novak Djokovic again. Jiri Vesely has already faced the Serbian tennis player twice, both of which he managed to win.
