Verstappen admitted that he made one unnecessary mistake last season. It was terribly embarrassing, says reigning champion
Max Verstappen has clearly dominated the 2023 season, winning the championship title with ease and leading the Red Bull Racing team to first place in the Constructors’ Cup. But there is one thing the three-time champion is ashamed of. And that’s a mistake he made at Silverstone.
Max Verstappen has clearly dominated the 2023 season, winning the championship title with ease and leading the Red Bull Racing team to first place in the Constructors’ Cup. But there is one thing the three-time champion is ashamed of. And that’s a mistake he made at Silverstone.
Verstappen has dominated nineteen of the twenty-two Grands Prix this year and has made his mark in the historical statistics of Formula One in very bold letters.
The Dutch driver has only failed to win races in Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan (both of which were won by his teammate Sergio Pérez) and Singapore, where Carlos Sainz triumphed.
“In Singapore, not everything went perfectly. Unfortunately, we made a mistake with the set-up of the car and Ferrari beat us in the end. That was our only loss this season,” Verstappen said in an interview with Swiss magazine Blick.
Otherwise, however, the Verstappen-Red Bull combination was almost flawless. Moreover, the reigning three-time champion broke a number of impressive records on his way to winning a third consecutive title.
The 19 wins in a single season is already a feat that no driver in F1 history has ever achieved. Verstappen also broke Alberto Ascari’s ancient record set in 1952, when he recorded a success rate of 86.36 per cent thanks to 19 wins from 22 races. You can read a list of the records he broke in the attached post below.
Verstappen calls Silverstone mistake embarrassing
While Red Bull has had a truly fascinating and fantastic season, even a master carpenter will make mistakes, as the popular saying goes. And that goes for both Red Bull (the aforementioned Singapore – ed.) and Verstappen himself.
The 26-year-old British Grand Prix World Champion hit the wall on his way out of the pit lane and damaged his front wing. But it certainly didn’t have any overwhelming impact on the race at Silverstone. Verstappen scored another victory there.
“I only made one big mistake this year. At Silverstone I hit the wall in the pit lane. That was pretty embarrassing,” Verstappen said in the aforementioned interview.
