The Istanbul circuit is another of the many alternates in this year’s Formula 1 season. After the loss of the Canadian Grand Prix and the rescheduling of the race in Australia, another change had to be made. And the circuit where the world champion was crowned last year has been called upon.

That circuit is Istanbul, which last season was the 14th of 17 rounds. And it was a crazy race indeed. It was already raining heavily in practice, and then in qualifying, and on a track that had newly laid asphalt, it was slippery all over and to a great extent.

On pole position was Lance Stroll (then Racing Point), who snatched first place from Max Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton was up to 6th and it looked like he wasn’t going to clinch the championship in this race just yet.

But the opposite was true. Hamilton’s race of a lifetime meant a first place finish, and thanks to a struggling Verstappen and Bottas, he celebrated the title.

This year, it is very likely that the title will not be celebrated in the city at the turn of Europe and Asia. In fact, in a very even season, we don’t expect to know a new or old champion in the 16th of 23 rounds of the championship.

So Turkey has to make a surprise appearance on 1-3 October, which was originally supposed to be another city Grand Prix, this time the one in Singapore. And hopefully it will offer us at least as good a race as last year.
