Raphael Varane is leaving Real Madrid after ten seasons to join Manchester United. The White Ballet want to use the money from this transfer to buy their dream striker.
Money has never been a problem. Although Varane is not one of the highest earning players in the team, president Florentino Pérez was willing to give him a pay rise. But the French stopper wants to try a new competition and, more importantly, a new challenge, something that Madrid can no longer guarantee him.
He has won everything he can in the white jersey. Four times in the Champions League, including a run of three wins in a row. Three La Liga, one Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and four Club World Cups. In addition, he won the 2018 World Cup with France.
Apart from 17 starts for Lens in the 2010-11 season, he has played his entire career at the Santiago Bernabéu. That’s why now, at the age of 28, he decided to try something new. And according to all the foreign newspapers, a deal with Manchester United is imminent.
As reported by Marca, El Transistor, Deportes Cuatro, AS, Fabrizio Romano, the English newspaper BBC and the French Le Parisien, Raphael Varane is expected to become the Red Devils’ new signing by the end of this week for a sum of around 50 million euros plus bonuses.
While the amount probably doesn’t match Varane’s qualities, one crucial fact plays a role. The French stopper is out of contract in Spain next year, so he could leave for free at the end of the season, just like Sergio Ramos did a few weeks ago. And nobody wants to let that happen at the Santiago Bernabéu, so he must necessarily come down in price.
Even so, the money should be put to good use. After all, Real Madrid have been longing for Kylian Mbappé for some time now, who should become the new superstar of Los Blancos.
Since Carlo Ancelotti can already count on David Alaba, who came from Bayern Munich for free, for the position of Varane, the money for this transfer should be used just for the transfer of Mbappe.
Real Madrid will thus lose two stoppers in one summer who have been at the heart of all the successes of the last decade. They should be replaced by David Alaba and Eder Militao, who put in fantastic performances last season in the absence of Varane and Ramos.
They should be backed up by the ever reliable Nacho, while the role of the fourth stopper should be filled by one of the youngsters from the B team, either Victor Chust, Pablo Ramón or Mario Gila. Jesús Vallejo, returning from a loan spell, is also a possibility.
